Letter From The Publisher

From Just Out Publisher Marty Davis:

Effective December 26, 2011, Just Out newsmagazine, serving Portland’s LGBTQ community since 1983, is no longer in business.

Three years of recession have taken their toll.

Please direct all inquiries to Marty Davis at marty@justout.com. Thank you for your many years of readership and support.

Happy & Merry Wishes!

All of us at Just Out want to take a moment to thank you for reading, Facebook-liking, Twitter-following and just plain being you.

The merriest, happiest and healthiest of holidays to you and yours.

Carey Drops New Holiday Video, Shows Off Twins (No, Really)

Well this is an improvement — even if we did, um, misinterpret the headline of E! Online’s post about twins stealing the spotlight. (Can ya blame us?)

Check the music video for Mariah’s ditty “When Christmas Comes,” the singer’s collaboration with soul crooner extraordinaire John Legend. In her latest seasonal opus, Mimi ditches Macy’s and The Biebs (and all of the ensuing inappropriateness) for this relatively low-key at-home affair, featuring hubby Nick Cannon and, yes, the couple’s infant twins.

She really is the gift that keeps on giving.

Happy holidays, lambs!

Christmas In Space Returns to Hollywood Theatre Tonight!

Wookies and magi-like aliens and vintage toy commercials, oh my! It really is the most wonderful time of the year!

May the holiday force Bea with you.

Back by popular demand, “Christmas in Space” — presented tonight at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd.) — pays homage to the Ghost of Christmas Past circa the ’70s. The evening will include an extraterrestrial visitation thanks to the hard-to-find special “A Cosmic Christmas,” old-school TV ads for equally old-school toys and, as we blogged about earlier this week, a rare, intergalactic holiday broadcast with Bea Arthur and Boba Fett, plus musical performances by The Ramones and a duet from Bing Crosby and David Bowie.

All that, Toby Keith’s “War on Christmas, and the promised “probing the vastness of space.” Mmmhmmm.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Tickets, $5, can be purchased online or at the Hollywood’s box office.

If you’d rather stay home for yuletide TV time, Logo has announced a full-week of themed programming, beginning tonight. Running December 23-29, the “7 Days of Holiday Sins” indulge in seasonal decadence with the following lineup of shows and movies:

Lust (Bad Sex, Noah’s Arc, 1 girl 5 gays);
Sloth (AbFab, Strangers With Candy, True Life);
Pride (Trantasia, Camp, The A-List: Dallas, The City);
Greed (My Super Sweet 16, Showgirls, Nip/Tuck);
Wrath (Buffy, Psycho Beach Party, Serial Mom, Trick R Treat);
Envy (The A-List: Dallas, Eating Out: Sloppy Seconds, Dare);
Gluttony (I Used to Be Fat, Little Shop of Horrors, Hairspray).

That should cover it this very [fill-in-the-vice blank] season, doncha think?

Vote for GayCities’ Best of 2011 Now!

The folks at GayCities, whose readers deemed Portland’s now-defunct E-Room the best lesbian bar in the country back in 2010, are at it again — and they want your input.

Click here to give your 2 cents in 9 categories for the Best of GayCities 2011. You’ve until January 4 to vote in categories ranging from “Best Resort Town” to “Best Food City.”

The complete listing also includes:

* Best Dressed

* Best Up and Coming City

* Best Settle Down

* Best Pride

* Best Nightlife

* Best Sand and Sun

* Best City 2011

Nearly 50 cities, from San Francisco to Rome, received nominations, with selections based on thousands of reviews, fans and check-ins this year by GayCities members across the globe. Portland didn’t make the finals in any of the categories — but that’s what write-in votes are for (cough cough).

Voting results (and the winner of a vacation package including two round-trip tickets and lodging for two nights anywhere American Airlines flies in North America) will be announced on January 5. GayCities reaches over 450,000 visitors each month and another 800,000 through its sister site, LGBT news and entertainment site Queerty.com.

Get to it. And speaking of travel, don’t forget to submit your logo design for a new PDX travel portal, presented by Q Center and PABA. Click here for deets.
