“People Choose To Be Gay”–And Other Gingrich Gems

If current GOP front-runner Newt Gingrich has his way, gays might be rounded up and sent back to the dark ages. A bit melodramatic? I don’t know, let’s rifle through his latest laundry list of anti-gay rhetoric, kindly provided to us by The Advocate.

–According to Gingrich, same-sex marriage is “eroding” American families. (I think he’s mixing that up with all his marriages and infidelity, but I regress.)

–He would attempt to re-establish “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and explains that he believes military leaders are lying when they say it’s been a smooth transition (to queer people serving openly) so far. (Are they also lying in all the other countries where gays serve openly?)

–Gingrich floats the long and widely disputed, discredited theory that people choose to be gay, like priests choose to be celibate. (Why is he dragging the Bachmanns into this?) He also not so subtly implies sexuality is meant primarily for procreation. (Like with this three wives!) It’s weird, he doesn’t address his long-held belief that you can leave/cheat on a dying spouse.

Other tidbits, to get you just riled up enough to thoroughly enjoy happy hour.

Here’s Newt trying to siphon Rick Santorum’s eleven supporters: “In an interview today with The Des Moines Register that was broadcast on C-SPAN, the former speaker of the House went so far as to praise Rick Santorum, a fellow candidate who has stuck to an antigay, supposedly pro-family theme more closely than any other in the race. Despite the appeal to Iowa’s socially conservative Republican caucus voters, Santorum is still mired in single digits in polls.”

Gingrich tries to wax intellectual: “I think marriage is between a man and a woman. That’s a value proposition. I think it is very important for society to try and emphasize that relationship. I think people growing up in a structure in which children have parents that they look up to and parents that they relate to is a very important thing.” Because, you know, that never happens with same-sex couples. They never successfully raise children.

If you can stomach it, you can read the rest of the story here. And to think this man has a gay half-sister. That must be a cozy Thanksgiving dinner. Oh wait, Gingrich proves his points by boycotting his gay kin.

The Obama camp must be salivating.

Please tell me this isn’t the best and brightest the GOP has to offer. John Huntsman, anyone? Please?
