Zimbabwean MP Jailed After Allegedly Calling Robert Mugabe a Homosexual
A member of the Zimbabwean Parliament has been jailed for allegedly asserting that President Robert Mugabe has had gay sex with other Zimbabwean political figures.
The Daily Nation reports:
Mrs. Lillian Kirenyi, a legislator from Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party was on Tuesday charged with undermining the authority of President Mugabe [pictured right].
The court was told that the MP committed the alleged offense during an address to party supporters on December 9.
She allegedly said: “Zanu PF (President Mugabe’s party) members been attacking MDC president Tsvangirai alleging he is pro-homosexuals yet Robert Mugabe has practiced homosexuality with (Professor) Jonathan Moyo (former Information minister) and Canaan Banana (Zimbabwe’s first ceremonial president).”
The late Mr. Banana was jailed for sodomising his bodyguard.
The State is officially against Kirenyi being granted bail, claiming both that she faces a very serious offense and also citing that she is safer in jail, protected from President Mugabe’s supporters.
Mugabe is outspokenly homophobic, having stated that gays are “worse than dogs and pigs.” He also called British Prime Minister David Cameron “satanic” after Cameron stated that Britain will not provide aid to developing states that criminalize homosexuality. However, some Zimbabwean politicians — including Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai — have recently come out in support of gay rights being written into the Zimbabwean constitution. What this decision to imprison Kirenyi means for Tsvangirai’s MDC party — and the party’s movement towards embracing equality — remains to be seen.
