Pussy Riot solidarity events

By now you’ve probably heard about the three ladies jailed in Russia for a feminist and anti-Putin rock performance, as well as the journalists tripping over their tongues due to their irreverent name. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, and Maria Alyokhina, 24, face up to three years in jail on charges of hoologanism and sacrilege for bursting into Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral in ski masks, short skirts and bright tights and belting out a “punk prayer” protesting against Putin’s close ties with the Orthodox Church.

Many big name celebrities, such as Yoko Ono, Bono and others have raised their voices in support and so will Portland tomorrow when a verdict announcement is expected in the case. We have at least three different events in three different locations to show solidarity with the Russian women starting with an afternoon rally in Pioneer Courthouse Square at 3pm. Then at 5 o’clock you can head across the river to Colonel Summers Park where cyclists will stage a solidarity bike ride. Lastly, North Portland’s Record Room will host a solidarity reading beginning at 8. Readings will be provided and anyone is invited to participate. Just make sure to come early if you’re interested.
