Readying For Primary Season, Gingrich Reiterates Antigay Position
A friendly reminder from Just Out as we ease our way into the primary voting season…(22 days until Iowa!)
Newly-positioned frontrunner Newt Gingrich, who last summer declined signing onto the Family Leader’s antigay candidates pledge,
has just sent a letter to the group reiterating “most” of the provisions from said list of promises, The Advocate reports.
For example: “To name a few, Gingrich promises to send a federal constitutional ban on same-sex marriage to the states for ratification. And he backs the Defense of Marriage Act — even taking credit for its passage.”
Also: ”As President, I will vigorously enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, which was enacted under my leadership as Speaker of the House, and ensure compliance with its provisions, especially in the military,” Gingrich wrote. “I will also aggressively defend the constitutionality of DOMA in federal and state courts.” (That latter link takes you right to The Family Leader’s site.)
Nothing like being on the wrong side of history. Just ask Newt’s half-sister! The Advocate reports Gingrich skipped her nuptials.
And he’s proud of DOMA!
Although the soon-to-be-GOP candidate, who’s been married a handful of times himself, has come out forcefully against gay marriage, he’s largely avoided questions of same sex parenting. He made no mention of queer families in his letter to Family Leader. For what it’s worth, Gingrich’s principal rival in the GOP primary, Mitt Romney, has continually refused to endorse Family Leader’s pledge. He calls it “undignified” and “inappropriate.” Score one for Romney, then? No? Just one?
