Gay fraternity comes to PDX

Delta Lambda Phi members at U Minnesota

College fraternities don’t have a reputation for being the most inclusive of clubs, certainly not when it comes to gay and bisexual men. But the Delta Lambda Phi frat is just for our set, with these guiding principles:

  1. To develop dignified and purposeful social, service, and recreational activities for progressive men, irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identity;
  2. To lead in determining the rights and privileges of individuals in society; and,
  3. To present a strong and positive image which respects the diversity of all individuals, irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identity.

They are holding their annual convention in Portland this July 19th-23rd. If you are a member of DLP you can register online here. For brothers-in-spirit you can attend Saturday’s dinner (details below).

Since 1990, Brothers of Delta Lambda Phi have gathered from across the country to recall our history, celebrate our present, and look together toward our future. This year promises to be a special Convention for the organization, serving as a celebration for the conclusion of our 25th year, and also our inaugural international year. Founded in 1986, Delta Lambda Phi has over 30 chapters and colonies spread over North America and thousands of active and alumni members living all across the globe. The Brothers of Delta Lambda Phi adhere to a moral code of guiding principles that include determining the rights of individuals in society and promoting a strong and positive image, which respects the diversity of all individuals.

The frat has an interesting history. It began Delta Lambda Phi’s founder, Vernon L. Strickland III met 3 older gay men and, together they lamented the dearth of collegiate and other social groups for men. The ones that did exist seemed to “…suffer from internal division, were focused on little beyond sex, or had lax membership standards.” In February of 1987 150 men showed up for a successful first rush with 29 ultimately pledging.

As someone who went to a liberal arts college without the Greek system I tend to be wary of the old money and/or party-hungry collectives that fraternities and sororities have a reputation for. But the inclusivity of Delta Lambda Phi is already a key difference, and holding their convention in the unconventional Portland, Oregon says even more about how awesome this brotherhood must be. And even if you’re not a member you can attend the dinner with DLP on Saturday the 21st:

Dinner with DLP invites LGBT supporters and Greek Life representatives in the Pacific Northwest to attend our banquet on Saturday, July 21. The event provides an opportunity to learn more about Delta Lambda Phi and for us to make and sustain lasting relationships with organizations who share our values and vision.
